1.4.1
- Links that open a new window (target="_blank", e.g. attachments on the
EAB forum) and window.open() open a new tab instead of replacing the
current page
- onclick and other event attributes work on pages that have no <script>
of their own
- Leaving a page with scripts is much faster: the script engine frees the
old page's memory with far less work
- Photos decode faster on every processor: JPEG Huffman codes come from
lookup tables and the hot JPEG/PNG decoder routines are inlined, with
exactly the same pixels
- Pictures appear sooner on 8-bit screens (AGA): converting them to
screen colours is much faster, with exactly the same result on screen
- Pages with big stylesheets are ready sooner, on the first visit and on
every later one
- Every page is prepared and drawn a little faster: tags, links and
element ids are handled with less work, TrueType letters need fewer
memory requests and line heights are not recomputed for every word
- Pages whose stylesheets use container queries (GitHub among them) no
longer re-read all their style sheets on every visit, so a revisit is
much faster
- Matching style rules against the page is faster on pages with big
stylesheets, on pages whose elements carry many class names and on pages
built on large sets of CSS variables (GitHub and other design systems)
- Revisiting a page that uses its own web fonts (@font-face - most sites
today) no longer re-reads all of its stylesheets, so it opens much
faster; the same for pages whose stylesheet sets the base text size
- Page scripts run faster: looking up an object's own property
(Object.defineProperty, getOwnPropertyDescriptor) no longer scans the
whole object, adding a property no longer hashes its name twice, and
listing an object's keys sorts them with less work, and a regular
expression literal is compiled once instead of on every use; every
page with scripts also starts sooner, because the built-in script
set-up does much less work
- Pages with very large stylesheets (Roundcube webmail and other
Bootstrap sites) need less free memory to load all their styles - on
machines with less RAM they could appear unstyled
- When there is not enough memory for all of a page's styles - also for a
style sheet added later by the page's script - the status bar says so
instead of leaving the page silently unstyled
- Drop-down lists (select) are as wide as their longest option, so option
names are no longer cut off; options inside groups (optgroup) count
too and can be chosen, and the list uses the page's font
- After "Install now" in the update requester the browser restarts
straight away instead of asking for one more click
- A small inline box holding several lines of text (a price with its
currency underneath, a two-line label) now lines up by its last line
like in other browsers, instead of sitting a line too low and making
the row taller
- Pages from servers that take a long time to start answering now load
instead of failing with a connection error, and the wait can be
cancelled with Esc or Stop
- Spacing blocks on pages built with Elementor have their intended height
again, so sections no longer sit too close together
- A page's own fonts are used even when the style that names them comes
before the stylesheet that provides them
- The word "!important" no longer appears on pages that mark generated
content (such as separators between menu items) as important
- Content of Elementor columns that is meant to be centred vertically
is centred again instead of sitting at the top of the column
- Drop-down menus and pop-ups that keep a gap above them inside flexible
layouts (such as the mobile menu on Elementor sites) open at the
intended distance instead of covering their button
- Buttons whose label sits in a flexible inner box (such as Elementor
buttons) no longer make their line taller than in other browsers
- Style sheets with very long addresses (such as the combined style
sheets of Liferay portals) are loaded instead of being skipped
- The versions without JavaScript now use the same faster memory
management as the JavaScript versions, so large pages load more quickly
- Image sliders that show only their first slide until their script
starts (Flickity and similar) no longer list every slide down the page
- Style rules meant for a page header menu no longer also apply to a menu
of the same shape in the page footer
- A heading closed with the wrong level (such as <h3> ... </h2>) is
closed like in other browsers, so what follows is no longer drawn as part
of the heading
- Banners whose text box is pinned to the bottom of a picture (such as
shop front-page sliders) keep the text in place instead of pushing it
below the banner
- Invisible characters placed by style rules (such as the zero-width
space before each menu item on The Guardian) no longer show up as
question marks
- Grid layouts with long line names (such as main-column-start) place
their items where the page says, so The Guardian's logo sits in its
header again instead of being cut off at the edge
- SVG pictures that take their colour from a style variable (such as
The Guardian's logo) are drawn in that colour instead of black
- Clicking the label of a checkbox that the page hides from view (the
usual way of building drop-down menus without scripts, such as The
Guardian's edition menu) ticks it and opens the menu
- Pages that start up from window.onload, <body onload> or
document.onreadystatechange (the oldest and still very common way of
starting a page's scripts) now run that code when the page has loaded
- Scripts and style sheets that a page builds in memory and loads through
a blob: address now work
- A style sheet that a script adds to the page already applies when its
load event fires
- Scripts that call a helper function with the same name as the object
method they are written in no longer loop forever
- Scripts now run inside the frames of pages built with <frameset>, so
menus that send their links to another frame (such as GGSData) open them
there instead of in the menu itself
- Code in onclick and other event attributes sees the element, its form
and the document the way other browsers do (for example setting the
link's target)
- A frame whose page is itself made of frames (such as amidog.se) shows
those frames instead of a "This page uses frames" list, and links in
frames follow the page's base target
- Colours written in the modern rgb() form with spaces (used by every
site built with Tailwind, such as btmaster.net) show correctly instead of
as red
- Text in a page's own font is drawn in the weight the page asks for:
light, medium and semi-bold text no longer turns into regular or bold,
so menus and headings keep their real width. Weights a page declares but
never uses are not downloaded
- WebP and AVIF pictures shown in several places on a page (such as a
logo in the header and again in the footer) get their real size
everywhere, and a picture shrunk to save memory keeps its real size on
the next visit too
- Text set in Georgia (one of the most common serif fonts on the web) is
drawn with Gelasio, a free font with exactly the same letter widths, so
headings and paragraphs keep their real width (TrueType only)
- Old-style form scripts work: fields and forms can be reached by their
name (form.password.value, document.login.submit())
- Scripts that change only a colour and read the style straight back get
the new value
- Radio Park added to the Radio PL menu
